Respirator Mask Fit Test

Fit Check vs Fit Test | Safety Network

A Respirator Mask Fit Test is performed to make sure the respirator is properly fitted to an individual’s face type to provide the safest protection. Typically, there are 2 types of tests that are done, known as a Qualitative test or a Quantitative test.

STS group fit test program not only fits masks, but provides specific training on the use, criteria for use, donning and removal of the mask, as well as other essential information related to mask use.

There are two Fit Testing methods, these are known as: Quantitative and Qualitative tests.

Quantitative tests – can be used to fit test all types of tight-fitting masks including disposable, half and full-face masks. Quantitative tests give an objective assessment of facial fit and provide a direct numerical result called a Fit Factor.

Qualitative tests – rely on the wearer’s subjective assessment of face seal leakage. These methods, during a set of test exercises, use the wearer’s sense of smell or taste to detect face seal leakage of a test agent.

Following the Canadian Standards Association CSA Z94.4-02 Selection, Care and Use of Respirators, our program provides a theoretical and practical component for respiratory protection.

To receive a certificate, the participant must be able to successfully pass the test and demonstrate proper donning and doffing of the mask. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a wallet card for their records.

Before you can be tested for Respirator Mask Fit Testing:

  • You must not smoke, eat, chew gum, drink any liquids (except water) at least 20 minutes prior to the test, to ensure an accurate, successful respirator mask fit test (All types of masks).
  • You must be clean shaven for the Respirator Protection Training testing procedure
  • As per Ontario Ministry of Labor rules, you must be re-certified for respirator mask fit testing every 24 months.
