Service Overview: Ensuring your workers are trained on the use of respiratory personal protective equipment is a basic requirement of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Providing knowledge transfer in this case specifically requires that the worker understands how to properly select, maintain and fit a mask. Fit testing involves the proper selection and fit of a mask, while considering activities performed when wearing a mask. The CSA, OSHA, NIOSH have either 7 or 8 movements designed to evaluate whether or not the mask fits properly.

Most organizations use qualitative fit testing which requires that a worker wear their mask, don a confining hood and then have some type of agent atomized in the hood. This test is very subjective, unreliable and error prone. Additionally, this method poses significant risk of cross contamination among participants as the hood is rarely sanitized between tests.

Respiratory fit testing provides the employer with objective results and a fit factor for each protocol and an overall fit score. Workers are not exposed to any nebulized liquids, such as saccharin, irritant smoke or Bittrex. At the end of the assessment, the employer is provided with a printout of the worker's assessment and fit score. This will enable the employer to prove due diligence.

Service Objectives:

  1. Provide a printed copy of the workers report to the employer.
  2. Provide options to workers in the event that a mask does not offer a minimum fit factor and reassess the worker for a different mask.
  3. Offer solutions to control exposures in areas identified as containing air quality and above acceptable levels as per legislative standards.
  4. Objectively evaluate the fit of masks.
